The Volatility of the Machine Learning Platform Market
Artificial intelligence is officially mainstream and if you have never heard of the term, you may be living under a rock. With that being said, the market leaders are battling it out day by day as the technology advances rapidly. According to the 2017 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Science and Machine Learning Platforms, there were four market “Leaders” – IBM, SAS, RapidMiner, and KNIME. Fast forward a year to Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant in which there are now five market “Leaders” – KNIME, Alteryx, SAS, RapidMiner, and H20.ai. Since change is everlasting in the tech world this may not appear substantial on the surface, however there is significant movement in the market if you dig deeper. In 2017, IBM was recognized as the Leader in this market, however within a year they have dropped off to the Visionary category due to lack of Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. On the other end of the spectrum is H2O.ai who have progressed from a Visionary in the 2017 Magic Quadrant to a Leader position this year due to their significant commercial expansion. H2O.ai gives hope to other start-ups, demonstrating that you can make an impact in the machine learning market without being a Fortune 500 company.
